I’d like to introduce you to my new favourite cocktail, The Hugo. In June, my family took a trip to Austria, where my mom’s family roots originate. Not only did we immensely enjoy the culture and the friendly Austrian folks, we LOVED the food and drinks!
This particular drink is unique because it has elderberry syrup, something I had never before tried, or even heard of. Elderberry syrup is extracted from elderflower blossoms, which grow all over Europe and are especially plentiful in Austria. In particular, the ‘Hugo’ cocktail is popular in the Tirol region of Austria, where we visited Salzburg and Innsbruck.
Elderberry and elderflower syrup are very popular all over Europe and are used in pancake mixes, marshmallows, liquers, Swedish desserts, wine, marmalade, and yogurt desserts, to name a few. The syrup is also excellent simply added to sparkling water for a refreshing drink.
My sister and I decided to stock up on our elderberry revelation, and then quickly discovered that Ikea sells it, so there will be many more Hugo’s to come =). Cheers!
