Lemon Coconut Bites & Gingerbread Smoothie [Plus a doTERRA Essential Oil Giveaway]

As modern scientific studies and trends lean towards more holistic approaches to health and wellness, I thought it was timely to discuss the potential health benefits of essential oils. An essential oil is a concentrated liquid containing volatile aroma compounds extracted from plants. Essential oils have been used medicinally throughout history, and have boomed in popularity in recent decades for their application in aromatherapy, helping with physical and psychological health.  There is now strong scientific evidence that essential oils can act as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents as well as having pharmacological effects on various tissues in the body. Many companies are now selling essential oils, one of these being doTERRA. doTERRA essential oils are 100% pure, containing no synthetic ingredients, as some brands do.
doTERRA Lemon oil is one of the most versatile. Firstly, lemon is a powerful cleansing agent that purifies the air and surfaces, and can be used as a non-toxic cleaner. It’s perfect for getting rid of leftover sticky residue from a sticker, etc. When diffused, Lemon is very uplifting and energizing and has been shown to help improve mood. Lemon is frequently added to food to enhance the flavor of desserts and main dishes (see recipe below). Simply add a drop to your water*. It’s not acidic, because it is cold pressed from the rind, not the pulp, so it will not damage your tooth enamel. Taken internally, Lemon may provide cleansing and digestive benefits and may support healthy respiratory function.

*When adding the oil to a drink or container, be sure to use glass, ceramic or metal, as the oil will break down plastic.

doTERRA OnGuard is a blend of wild orange peel, clove bud, cinnamon leaf, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus leaf, and rosemary leaf/flower essential oils, making it a great addition to any pumpkin or gingerbread flavoured drink or baked good. See Gingerbread Smoothie recipe below.

The best way to use OnGuard is preventatively. It has been scientifically proven to boost the immune system, so it can protect against environmental and seasonal threats. OnGuard can be taken internally on a daily basis, rolled onto your skin or diffused into the air. If you feel you are coming down with a cold or starting to feel sick, take 2 drops in a shot of water every 3-4 hours, make a roller bottle and roll on the soles of your feet morning and night, or diffuse it.

Lemon Coconut Bites & Gingerbread Smoothie

Lemon Coconut Bites & Gingerbread Smoothie

Ingredients

Lemon Coconut Bites:
1 1/2 cups cashews
1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
1/2 cup coconut flour
1 cup dates
zest of 1 lemon
6 drops doTERRA lemon oil
Gingerbread Smoothie:
1/2 cup plain, greek yogurt (0-2% MF)
1/2 cup milk (I used 1%)
1 tsp natural vanilla extract
1 drop doTERRA On Guard Protective Blend (do not use more than 1 drop - very strong!)
1 frozen banana
1 tsp ground flaxseed
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp molasses

Instructions

    Lemon Coconut Bites:
In a food processor, pulse all ingredients until you can form into a dough.
With slightly damp hands, roll about 1 heaping tablespoon of the mixture into balls. Store in a sealed bag or an airtight container for up to 1 week in the fridge or up to 3 months in the freezer.
    Gingerbread Smoothie:
Place all ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

Notes

Lemon Coconut Energy Bites: To make without doTERRA lemon oil, add an additional tsp of lemon zest.

Gingerbread Smoothie: To make without doTERRA On Guard oil, add a pinch of nutmeg.

DoTerra is the best! I recently learned about the OnGuard spray available from the US warehouse, replaces the alcohol based hand sanitizers. I so want to try this!

Tina! I know, isn’t that awesome!? Some hospitals in the US are using essential oils to fight against MRSA =)

Finally! Getting away from the chemicals (that are killing us!) and using natural products. I really hope this catches on and there is more of a move away from big pharma and trying with natural products first in health care.

I just made the smoothie! So yummy!! Rich and creamy flavor. I had coconut yogurt ( plain unsweetened) on hand and used it instead of the Greek yogurt. I will definitely make this again.

Sarah, I made the mistake of using 6 drops of OnGuard in my gingerbread smoothie the first time and it tasted terrible!! I’m happy to have figured it out for you =)
