Homemade Nutella

August 17, 2013 By Carolyn Berry 3 Comments

nutella 2I have a love/hate relationship with Nutella.  I love the smooth, creamy texture and the sweet, nutty flavour, but I’m not a fan of the ingredient list.  After all, sugar and palm oil are the main ingredients, not hazelnuts or milk, which is what you might expect to find in a jar.  Emulsifiers and artificial flavours are also thrown into the mix. Not to mention, the company is very misleading in its advertisements, convincing us that Nutella is part of a healthy breakfast to get us through the day.

nutella 3I don’t know about you, but I like my guilty pleasures to be a bit less guilty, so I decided to create my own Nutella from scratch.  All you need is 5 ingredients and about 15-20 minutes.  (Besides eating it by the spoonful) I love using this sweet spread as a fruit dip, swirling it into my favourite chocolate chip cookie dough, on ice cream, or spread on a Digestive cookie or Graham cracker.

When it comes to eating a healthy energy-packed breakfast, we’re all better off sticking to natural peanut butter or any other natural nut butter with our toast or in our smoothies.  Think of Nutella (or the homemade version) as a treat.

Homemade Nutella

Ingredients

1 cup hazelnuts
1 cup evaporated skim milk
1/4 cup granulated sugar
pinch salt
2/3 cup dark or milk chocolate chips

Instructions

Toast hazelnuts in the oven at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
In the meantime, heat the milk, sugar and salt in a small saucepan. Remove from heat when the sugar is melted.
Melt the chocolate chips over a double boiler (or place a glass bowl over a pot of boiling water).
Remove toasted hazelnuts from oven and rub them with a towel or your fingers to remove as much of the skin as possible.
Put hazelnuts in food processor and puree until nuts are fine. Add the milk mixture and chocolate chips. Puree until smooth. Mixture will be very runny, but once it sits in the fridge for a few hours it will solidify.
